About the Fund

Where do we come from?
The Innovation Fund Kría was established through the merger of two funds with different focuses: The Icelandic New Business Venture Fund and Kría. In the newly combined fund, emphasis is placed on preserving the distinct strengths and legacies of its predecessors through two main categories of investments. On the one hand, fund investments, where the approach is long-term, and on the other, direct investments, where for more than 25 years the core focus and strength has been a sustainable, evergreen approach.

Role

The support provided by the Innovation Fund Kría shall reflect the investment opportunities available in the market, with the Fund focusing on areas where the need for public support is greatest at any given time.

The Fund shall be guided by reasonable returns, without engaging in direct competition with existing investors where sufficient private capital is already available. Furthermore, the Fund aims to enhance continuity in public support for investment and innovation, where relevant, including financing initiatives under the European Union’s Cooperation Programmes.

The Fund is authorized to invest in funds, provide convertible loans, make direct investments in start-ups and innovation-driven companies, and offer other forms of financing comparable to those found in the international financing environment for start-ups and innovation companies.

Investments

The Fund places emphasis on providing support where the need is greatest at any given time, addressing what may be defined as a market failure, while avoiding direct competition with existing investors. The Fund shall be guided by the principle of achieving reasonable returns. In all projects, attention is given to strengthening continuity in public support for innovation-driven companies.

In its direct investments, the Fund focuses on start-ups and innovation companies, which, as defined by law, are enterprises that are not yet established, are in the early stages of growth, are considered small, and whose principal activity is the development of specific business ideas.
