Mýsköpun

Mýsköpun is a biotechnology startup specializing in the cultivation of microalgae from a unique strain discovered in Lake Mývatn. The company produces protein-rich products from these algae, which are considered health-boosting dietary supplements, rich in both minerals and antioxidants. The cultivation process relies on photosynthesis under optimal temperature conditions, which is why the production site is planned near the Bjarnarflag geothermal power plant in the Mývatn region. In the first phase of development, the company will begin small-scale production—about 100 to 200 kg per year—of Spirulina and Chlorella algae. Once production stability is achieved, preparations will begin for a significant scale-up, including substantial investments in facilities and equipment. The long-term goal is to reach an annual production of around 100 tons of algae. The founder of Mýsköpun is Professor Hjörleifur Einarsson, whose research team has conducted extensive studies on algae in Lake Mývatn.
