Aurora Abalone

Aurora Abalone is Iceland’s only abalone farming company. The company cultivates Ezo abalone (Haliotis discus hannai), highly prized in Japanese cuisine, as well as hybrids of Ezo and red abalone, in land-based aquaculture facilities in Grindavík and on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Its breeding stock has been developed over decades from Japanese stocks originating in Hokkaido, Iwate and Miyagi. The farming operation uses lava-filtered seawater from boreholes, heated using waste geothermal water from a power plant. Locally cultivated sea lettuce also forms part of the abalone’s diet. The company employs 11 people. Aurora Abalone is currently preparing to build a new farming facility at HS Orka’s Resource Park, which will become Europe’s largest abalone farm, while developing markets for its products in Europe, the United States and Asia.
